This is without compromising payload, which is almost 10,000 kg, even allowing for the fact that the 18 tonne LF55s have a sleeper cab and are fitted with a tuckaway tail-lift, which was also a factory fitment.

“Specifying complete trucks built at PACCAR’s Leyland Assembly Plant was a win-win for us,” says H & M Distribution managing director John Hunt. “We got trucks with a 9.2 metre curtain-sider body built to our exact specification and to the same high factory build quality standards for the whole vehicle. And they are giving us a 12.5% increase in volume along with a generous payload.

“On top of that we got them on time and in a shorter time than going down the conventional bodybuilding route. We also have only one point of warranty for chassis, body and ancillary equipment like the tail-lift, which will simplify things considerably for us. It’s a level of service that I’m very impressed by!”

One of the new vehicles is operating from each of the three locations that the fast-growing Warrington company has established since it was formed just six years ago. The head office is in the North West with depots in Gloucestershire and Bedfordshire and the availability of a consistently high standard of support from DAF dealerships close to each of these locations was one of the key factors in the decision to acquire the LFs.

Typically the new trucks will make between 25 and 40 pick-ups and drops a day for delivery to points throughout the UK and mainland Europe through the Palletways UK hubs in Lichfield, Leeds and Livingston. Substantial investment by H & M Distribution in IT ensures that loads can be tracked at all points enabling customers to be reliably informed of delivery times.

H & M Distribution has specified the 250 bhp (184 kW) rating for the 6.7 litre engine powering the new DAFs. At 18 tonnes this ensures a generous 13.88 bhp of power to weight enabling the trucks to move off easily in all load or road conditions and maintain good journey times.

Drivers are reported to be very happy with the specification of their new DAFs, which includes electric windows, cruise control, an exhaust brake and hands-free ‘phone kit. The company also elected for the sleeper cab option both to provide drivers with more space in the cab and to achieve better residual values when the trucks come up for replacement.

DAF dealer North West Trucks supplied the trucks through their dealership at Huyton on Merseyside. The cabs were vinyl wrapped in H & M Distribution’s stylish new livery by Irlam company Signs Northwest.
