Family-run haulage firm Robert Burns Limited has called on the expertise of Carrier Transicold UK to help transport cargoes of fresh meat and perishables with an order for six Vector™ 1950 MT (multi-temperature) systems. Carrier Transicold helps improve global transport and shipping temperature control with a complete line of equipment for refrigerated trucks, trailers and containers, and is a part of UTC Building & Industrial Systems, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
Carrier Transicold’s new Vector 1950 MT unit offers a four per cent increase in refrigeration capacity, up to 18,800 watts. This results in faster pull-down times and the ability to haul larger loads over long distances. Its condenser is smaller and lighter than the previous model, providing improved efficiency.
“We considered our options carefully before placing this latest order. We didn’t want to simply replace like for like,” said Andrew Burns, fleet engineer, Robert Burns Limited. “We haven’t specified a Carrier Transicold refrigeration unit for more than a decade, but we’ve recently had a lot of experience with Carrier systems on trailers we’ve hired. This was enough to convince us of the Vector unit’s impressive performance and reliability.”
The latest Vector 1950 MT units use a microchannel condenser coil that contributes to reducing fuel consumption by approximately 10 per cent per watt delivered. These coils enable a compact design that results in a 17 per cent reduction in the unit’s refrigerant charge.
The new units are equipped with Carrier Transicold’s patented E-Drive™ all-electric technology, which removes mechanical transmissions found in conventional belt-driven systems and transforms engine power into electricity through a generator. This power method ensures precise temperature control to within +/- 0.3 degrees Celsius of the set point for maximum load protection.
“Our vehicles travel thousands of miles every week transporting fresh and frozen meat all over the U.K. Maintaining temperature integrity is at the forefront of our minds, and our recent experience with the Vector-equipped trailers has been first class. We’re confident these new Carrier units will do the job for us,” Burns said.
Robert Burns Limited operates a modern fleet comprising a mixture of Volvo and Scania 6-by-2 tractor units and plans to keep the new trailers in operation for six years. The six new Vector units are mounted to tri-axle Gray & Adams multi-compartment trailers and join a fleet of 38 trucks and 50 trailers, delivering temperature-sensitive loads across the U.K. from the company’s Broxburn base outside Edinburgh, Scotland.
