“Our attendance at The Skills Show generated massive interest in the Volvo Trucks Apprenticeship Programme,” reports Volvo Trucks Commercial Academy and Apprenticeship Manager Adam Plastow. “It was an unqualified success,” he added, “We were able to talk to a wide range of high quality potential applicants at The Skills Show.”
“We achieved our objective,” reported Adam Plastow, before enthusiastically adding: “We are very pleased to report that the fantastic response we received from young people visiting The Skills Show, should translate into a significant number of quality applications for the next and subsequent intakes of Volvo Trucks Apprentices.”
“In our opinion the Volvo Trucks Commercial Academy delivers the best and most advanced truck manufacturers’ Apprentice Programme in the UK.” Explained Adam Plastow. “Volvo Trucks products focus on safety, quality and care for the environment. Our trucks are ultra-high-tech and will continue to become more sophisticated. We need Technicians who are trained to work with this technology in an increasingly clean working environment.”
“We are also working with the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI),” continued Adam, “to create a national competition to display the skills of our young people. It will be known as The Heavy Vehicle Skills competition and will ideally be showcased at The Skills Show in 2015.”
“The Heavy Vehicle Skills competition will be for Advanced Apprentices and we hope to involve all other truck manufacturers.” Concluded Adam Plastow.
The Volvo Trucks Apprentice Programme is sponsored by the Volvo Trucks Dealer network. It is delivered over four years of ‘block’ attendance at Stephenson College, Coalville, Leicestershire, who are long-term partners of the programme.
This was the first time that Volvo Trucks had attended The Skills Show. Held at Birmingham’s NEC, it plays host to around 80,000 visitors, including thousands of young people looking to talk to potential employers. The three day event, held on 13th to 15th November, is reported to be the biggest employment and training showcase of its kind in the UK.
With a brand new Volvo FMX four-axle construction truck forming a high profile, highly visible backdrop on the stand, Adam Plastow and Volvo Trucks Commercial Academy colleagues talked to a steady stream of visitors interested in finding out more about the Volvo Trucks Apprenticeship Programme.
They were ably assisted at The Skills Show by a number of Volvo Trucks Apprentices and recently graduated Apprentices who were able to talk knowledgeably with visitors about their experience.
