One of the largest specialist transport companies in the UK has expanded its fleet of custom-built vehicles featuring the first of a new model Volvo tractor unit to arrive in the UK, thanks to funding from Lloyds Bank.

David Watson Transport, with depots in Essex, Kent, Northampton, Stafford and Norfolk, was originally established in 1986 under the name Milbank Trucks Ltd, as part of the Milbank group of companies. In 2008 managing director David Watson, who joined the company as a truck driver, took over the company along with operations manager Russell Cooper, with support from Lloyds Bank.
Offering specialist 24/7 haulage services across the UK and Europe, which in the past has included the transport and installation of the Olympic rings to Stratford for the 2012 London Olympics, today the business has almost 100 vehicles in its fleet and six depots across the UK.
With signs of recovery in the UK economy driving fresh growth within the business, David has been able to take on 10 new specialist trucks worth £1.5m through Lloyds Asset Finance.
The latest additions to the fleet features a brand new Volvo complete with an 82 tonne Italian manufactured mounted metre crane – which is the first of its kind in the UK, with the serial number 0001 to prove it. All of the new specialist trucks and trailers at DW Transport have been custom-built over a 6-7 month period with each vehicle costing in the region of £200,000 to produce.
Italian manufactured cranes are the preferred choice for the vehicles at DW Transport thanks to their reliability and renowned safety systems.
David said: “We needed to go through a replacement programme on our vehicles and because work has been picking up we were also looking to expand the fleet.
“The high capital cost and specialist nature of our vehicles means asset finance through Lloyds Bank has been the best route for us. Lloyds has been very supportive since the beginning of the business and their asset finance has been competitive with interest rates.
“As part of our broader expansion programme we are now actively looking for a new site to open an additional depot, something which Lloyds Bank has also said it would be happy to help us fund.
“We sell ourselves on reliability and professionalism and don’t let competitors grow around us. As the business is growing we will obviously be looking to add to our 140-strong team of staff.”
