Shared-user distribution specialist Lenham Storage has gained the coveted accreditation of the British Retail Consortium for the storage and distribution it provides to the grocery sector.
The BRC is one of the country’s leading trade bodies, and represents many of Kent-based Lenham Storage’s customers in the food, drink and FMCG sectors.
Its accreditation scheme amounts to a seal of approval, providing BRC members with a guarantee that suppliers who gain recognition are working to the highest possible standards.
Lenham Storage’s success in earning the BRC Standard in Storage and Distribution certificate is the culmination of two years of hard work by staff at all levels of the company, led by Director of Risk Management Steve Phibbs and supported by specialist Richard Mallett.
BRC staff undertook a thorough inspection of Lenham’s premises, processes and distribution systems before awarding the certificate – and the company’s performance will now be audited on an ongoing basis.
“The BRC has a written code of practice, called the Global Standard for Storage and Distribution, which is intended to ensure that food products are managed and handled safely throughout the storage and distribution process,” said Richard.
“The main benefit of the BRC standard is that it allows suppliers like Lenham Storage to demonstrate to its retail and food manufacturing customers that it is performing to a strictly measured set of standards, adhering to all relevant legislation and to the BRC’s code of practice.
“For customers who don’t have the resources necessary to write their own codes and audit suppliers’ performance standards independently, this provides all the evidence they need that their products are being handled correctly.”
Lenham undertook an extensive staff training programme, designed to raise skill levels and make sure that all employees, from Director level through to warehouse staff and drivers, understand and play their part in maintaining the company’s exacting level of service.
Steve Phibbs said: “Every member of staff has given their backing to what we wanted to achieve, and this certificate is a tribute to their efforts.”

Lenham Storage provides warehousing and shared-user transport services to Britain’s biggest retailers. The family-owned company relies on a fleet of 260 trucks and trailers to deliver foods, beverages and other fmcg (fast-moving consumer goods) products nationwide. It employs more than 450 people and operates more than three quarters of a million square feet of ambient and temperature-controlled warehousing at its headquarters in the village of Lenham, and a second site in Andover.
