National 3PL Howard Tenens has taken delivery of eight new Schmitz Cargobull S.KO COOL tri-axle deep freeze trailers, to replace units that have put in more than a decade of service transporting fresh fruit and vegetables from Andover to wholesale distribution centres in London.
The reefers will be double-shifted on a 24/7 basis, with a double-deck system allowing the transport of an additional 26 pallets for maximum payload.
Paul Gowland, Group Fleet Manager at Howard Tenens, says: “We have run our existing Schmitz Cargobull reefers for 12 years – well beyond the traditional life expectancy for a trailer of this type, thanks to the exceptional build quality and consistent payload capacity. Now we are replacing them, Schmitz Cargobull was the obvious and indeed only choice for the new trailers to support our long-term fruit and vegetable contract over the next decade.”
The refrigerated trailers were built in Vreden, Germany, and are equipped with a range of Schmitz Cargobull’s new-generation features including the manufacturer’s double decker loading system, which is uniquely designed to attach to recessed wall-mounted rails and purpose-built support beams set just below roof level. This allows for optimal temperature control by ensuring an even and constant airflow throughout the loadspace.
The system is easily assembled and can be disassembled just as quickly, giving Howard Tenens complete flexibility with its payload. The height-adjustable support beams allow for greater load versatility and the provision of additional capacity when needed.
The trailers are constructed with Schmitz Cargobull’s proprietary FERROPLAST® technology, which features NX17 polyurethane hard foam sandwiched between specially developed, multi-layered metal surfaces resulting in increased energy efficiency, hygiene and repairability. A special adhesive joining process creates completely vapour diffusion-tight surfaces, which do not absorb moisture ensuring the payload remains constant throughout the trailers’ life.
Schmitz Cargobull has also fitted its innovative MF6 PIEK-certified multi-function floor, which coupled with the quiet refrigeration units reduce noise emissions to less than 60 dB, ideal for loading at night in noise-restricted areas.
“Schmitz Cargobull manufactures a very good trailer. The quality is unsurpassed and the low overall lifetime costs, thanks to its durability and ease of maintenance, give it an edge in a very competitive market. We were also very impressed that the trailers were delivered well within the quoted time period,” adds Gowland.
Howard Tenens is a privately-owned logistics provider with a fleet of 157 vehicles and 394 trailers. The company offers national storage facilities, warehousing and contract logistics management with over 3,000,000 sq ft of warehousing across the country.
