An innovative scheme, which could both boost the image of the road transport industry and contribute significantly to the survival prospects of victims of road traffic accidents is being launched at the CV Show.Driver First Assist

Driver First Assist (DFA), which has the active support of all three emergency services and the NHS, aims to train professional drivers (starting with truck drivers but later rolling out to bus, coach and car fleet drivers) in basic first aid techniques which could be deployed at the scene of an accident, providing vital initial assistance.

The man behind DFA, former truck driver, Business Development Director at the Road Transport Industry Training Board and General Secretary of the United Road Transport Union, David Higginbottom, explains: “The first few minutes after an RTA are critical and that is the time – before the police, ambulance and fire services arrive – when many casualties would greatly benefit from the attention of someone trained in basic first aid techniques. Its virtually certain that a professional driver will be the amongst the first on the scene. We aim to train some of those drivers to give assistance – a highly visible symbol of the road transport industry’s positive role in society”.

The DFA stand at the CV Show – No 110 in Hall 3D – will feature a simulated RTA and will be staffed by emergency service professionals who will explain why the DFA concept makes such tremendous sense.

DFA, a not-for-profit organisation which has received significant sponsorship and support from logistics giant Gist, is now actively seeking long term sponsorship partners to turn its vision into reality.
