Marie Curie personally thanked Dennison Commercials’ employees last month after they raised £24,400 for the charity and funded approximately 1,200 hours of local nursing care with the Payroll Giving scheme.
Initially 26 members of Dennison’s staff were involved in raising nearly £25,000, but after Alison Wilson, Regular Care Giving Fundraiser at Marie Curie, travelled across the province to visit the Volvo truck and bus dealer’s five depots, an additional 39 employees signed up, raising the staff’s annually donation to £5,118.
Marie Curie has 150 Northern Ireland nurses providing care and support to people through terminal illness within the comfort of their own homes. Alison Wilson explains how the scheme helps with the running of this valuable service, “Payroll Giving provides Marie Curie with a regular and reliable source of income, and without the generosity of donors, like Dennison’s employees, we would be unable to deliver our vital services to local families during such a stressful time.”
John Johnston, Vehicle Handover Specialist at Dennison Commercials has been donating since the schemes induction within the company in 2003, “It’s surprising to think a small amount coming out of everyone’s wages could raise this amount. I signed up because it was a good cause and one that could affect someone I know, but I never thought we would all make such a difference and I am happy to say I had a small part to play in it.”
In addition to the Payroll Giving scheme, Dennison’s staff have supported Marie Curie in marathons and FROG cycle events.
John Jenkins, MD of Dennison Commercial’s comments of his staff’s donation, “This is solely our employees’ achievement. Their generosity over a decade has raised, and will continue to raise money for Marie Curie. We’re very proud to have such considerate people working for us and indeed for our customers.”
Dennison Commercials itself also places supporting local charity and community high on their corporate responsibility agenda. As well as offering employees Payroll Giving opportunities they complete the maintenance requirements of the Action Cancer ‘Big Bus’, and service the four Belfast ‘SOS’ Buses free of charge. They commit to one fundraising event for one cause each year, such as an 85 mile ‘lap of the lough’ cycle for the Jonjo Bright Trust, and they support local schools by participation in various careers and employability initiatives.
