The International Road Transport Union (IRU) has briefed the European Parliament on the social and economic importance of transport.
Marc Billiet, Head of EU Goods Transport for IRU, spoke to MEPs on both commercial road freight and collective road passenger transport last week, including the crucial role of trucks in linking logistics chains across and beyond the continent.
He also reiterated the public interest in promoting the use of collective passenger transport, including bus, coach and taxi. This widens accessibility to mobility services for all citizens, as well as improving road safety and reducing environmental impact.
The role of innovation in commercial road freight and passenger transport, and how governments can encourage more innovative practices and services, were also stressed.
