Moving 3 million pies, pasties and sausage rolls – among other foods – across the UK each week for Peter’s Food Service keeps a fleet of 115 distribution and delivery vehicles endlessly on the road. With all those miles on the road, the safety team at Peter’s Food Service were keen to ensure that the risk of incidents and collisions was mitigated, so they sought help from Lytx®, Inc., the global leader in video-based driver safety solutions.
Peter’s, which began more than 50 years ago with ‘Thomas Pies’ in Merthyr Tydfil, has grown to be a household name, and operates from its headquarters in Caerphilly, with 10 distribution centres serving 13,500 fast food outlets, fish bars, restaurants, retailers, schools, hospitals and hotels, with a range of more than 900 product lines.
To keep business running smoothly, Peter’s must keep customers well stocked and that means having a safe, well running fleet. To encourage safer driving and minimise the likelihood of road incidents, Peter’s ran an extensive head-to-head trial of a number of video-based safety solutions, before selecting the Lytx DriveCam Safety Programme.
The Lytx DriveCam solution chosen by Peters Food Service records both the road and the driver’s actions, and transmits video clips for review when certain events occur, such as harsh braking. These clips are reviewed by Lytx-trained experts and pertinent clips are prioritised for client’s use in driver coaching. This allows for an efficient way for driving standards and behaviours to be continuously improved. The system also helps protect drivers in the event of an incident that was not their fault by providing a clearer picture of what actually happened.
“We have an excellent team of drivers, but it is important that we continue to monitor and develop their skills wherever possible,” said Mark Killin, Peter’s Food Service Transport Manager. “We selected Lytx because of the nearly two decades of experience behind the insights they provided about our fleet and the excellent customer service they demonstrated throughout.”
The Lytx DriveCam Safety Programme captures video when triggered by events defined by the client, and in the case of Peter’s, they were looking for opportunities to improve safety at all points of the driver’s day, starting when the driver takes the seat.
“Lytx can identify behaviours that could impact safety, and provide data and insights to help drivers maintain and improve driving standards” said Dafydd Davies, Health, Safety, Environment & Training Manager for Peter’s.
Damian Penney, Vice President and General Manager Europe at Lytx, said, “Being selected as the safety partner by such a prestigious brand is an honour. We look forward to working closely with Peters Food Service to ensure that their drivers and other road users are as safe as they can be, a goal we share with our more than 1,300 clients.”
The Lytx DriveCam Safety Programme combines video event capture, predictive analytics, driver coaching, fleet tracking, and more to improve driver behaviours, protect and save lives, and reduce operational expenses. It helps fleets identify their riskiest drivers quickly and efficiently, and is proven to decrease collision costs by up to 80 percent.
