The Road Haulage Association is urging hauliers and lorry drivers to stop using mobile phones while driving. It follows the jailing of a lorry driver who killed a mother and 3 children while distracted by his phone.
Tomasz Kroker was jailed for 10 years at Reading Crown court today after pleading guilty to 4 counts of causing death by dangerous driving.
Commenting, RHA Chief Executive Richard Burnett said: “This practice needs to be eradicated from the industry once and for all. There is abundant evidence that use of hand-held mobiles – as opposed to hands-free devices – is a major cause of road accidents. The two issues should not be confused. The use of hand-held mobiles is the safety risk that has to be addressed, through much stronger deterrents. We welcome today’s sentence which sends out a strong signal to lorry drivers who risk other’s lives through this act of stupidity.”
